But what are the real bondage stories? The truth about the hardcore of bondage is, to the uninitiated, perhaps just as disturbing. While novices and couples engage in light sexual bondage together and lesbian slaves engage in temporary “scenes” with a dominatrix now and again, another sector of BDSM transforms the unique and startling sexual practice into a social philosophy with its own ideas of what life and happiness really are. The lives of Master/slave couples are anything but ordinary, though neither do they match up to the conspiratorial bondage stories and lore circulating around the scene clubs and parties. M/s couples live and work normally, but the slave has signed himself completely and irretrievably into the control of his master for emotional, physical, and sexual bondage. He is allowed to possess no property, friends, clothing, or ideas not first approved of by his master. Yet many of these relationships seem healthier than the approved heterosexual marriage witnessed by state or church. Communication and trust are absolutely essential to these relationships, as the Master is aware of how fragile his slave’s mental health is, and works hard to get to know the slave’s “self”.
